Vishniac visually brings to life the stunning photography of Roman Vishniac. He is best known for the images he took crisscrossing Eastern Europe from 1935 to 1938 on assignment for the American Joint Distribution Committee to photograph Jewish life in an effort to raise funds for impoverished Jewish communities. Vishniac was also an avid scientist who made considerable contributions in the field of microscopic photography. From a trio of JFilm alum filmmakers (executive producer Nancy Spielberg, producer Roberta Grossman, and director Laura Bialas), this visually captivating film introduces us to a charismatic and sometimes mysterious modernist photographer who not only captured an entire era of Jewish history, but later revealed a never before seen world living on the other side of the microscopic lens.
