FILMS
Danish director Jonas Poher Rasmussen’s animated documentary, Flee reveals the extraordinary survival story of his friend, an Afghan refugee who refuses to be shown on camera and goes only by the pseudonym, Amin Nawabi. The film is told through a hybrid interview-therapy session in which Amin recounts the string of events that led his family to escape to Europe at the start of Afghanistan’s 1978 Civil War. Now living in Copenhagen and separated from his family, Amin is on the verge of marriage to his partner but remains anxious about many aspects of his life. Using animation interspersed with archival footage, Rasmussen’s stunning approach to telling Amin’s story leaves little question as to why Flee is one of the most celebrated and acclaimed films of the year.
