An unlikely friendship develops across the continents when a lonely 8-year-old Australian girl, Mary (voice of Toni Collette), invites Max (voice of Philip Seymour Hoffman) to be her pen pal. Max lives in New York City and is an obese, 44-year-old Jewish man with Asperger's Syndrome. He also has no friends until Mary takes him into her heart.
