Psalms

This musical film depicts how ancient Jewish themes resonate in a divided modern world.

Director's Statement: "Psalms is a musical odyssey, which is structured musically rather than as a conventional narrative film. Every sound heard in the film is made by the human voice. The work was inspired by childhood memories of my paternal grandmother singing 'The Lord’s My Shepherd' to me in Welsh. 40 years later, when the pandemic tore through my synagogue, my rabbi asked me to write a setting of the same psalm to bring hope to our terrified community. It instantly struck me how these ancient Judean texts continue to have huge resonance across different communities and religions, uniting us all. Psalms became a labour of love which took four years to make. Each of the singers in the piece sings a sequence from the Torah, followed by a self-written, modern-day response to themes from the text." —Benjamin Till
