This coming of age tale tells the story of teenager Arik and his relationship with Haifa’s matchmaker, Yankele Bride. Yankele, a Romanian Holocaust survivor, hires young Arik to spy on his clients and potential suitors, searching for their secrets. But the mysterious matchmaker has many of his own, as Arik soon finds out. Yankele introduces Arik to the world of colorful characters and lonely hearts that populate Haifa in 1968. Directed by prolific Israeli filmmaker Avi Nesher and adapted from the novel “When Heroes Fly” by award-winning writer Amir Gutfreund, “The Matchmaker” was nominated for seven Israeli Ophir Awards, including Best Picture.
