The Tobacconist
Pittsburgh Premiere

Based on the international best-selling book by Robert Seethaler, The Tobacconist is a coming-of-age drama about Franz, a seventeen-year-old boy who is sent to Vienna to apprentice at a tobacco shop. There he befriends a regular customer, Sigmund Freud, who helps the young man deal with the emotional turmoil of first love. Meanwhile, the political and social conditions continue to worsen with the Nazi’s arrival in Vienna, and both Franz and Freud find themselves swept up in the maelstrom. Featuring a stunning recreation of late 1930’s Vienna and an outstanding performance by iconic German actor Bruno Ganz as Sigmund Freud, The Tobacconist is literally a heartbreaking Freudian romance. (Adult content: sex, nudity)

“The film expertly captures the tensions in the Austrian capital on the eve of Hitler’s takeover, and it also manages to be a vibrant coming-of-age story and an intriguing portrayal of Sigmund Freud, expertly portrayed by Bruno Ganz.” — Stephen Farber, The Hollywood Reporter
