A small but vibrant Sephardic Orthodox community becomes divided after a mishap at their shul in Emil Ben-Shimon’s debut film. A new Rabbi offers his services during the crisis but ends up driving a wedge between the previously close men and women of the community. Infused with humor and memorable characters, this bona fide hit at the Israeli box office features a deep respect for ancient ritual while at the same time questioning extreme beliefs.
Official Selection – Toronto International Film Festival
Nominated for five Israeli Academy Awards including Best Supporting Actress and Best Supporting Actor.
“Viewers will leave the theater in a joyous mood.” Alissa Simon, Variety
“The film gives all the characters their due…with the result that The Women’s Balcony, thanks also in part to its jaunty musical score, emerges as a surprisingly feel-good comedy.” Frank Scheck, Hollywood Reporte
