Micro Interview: Robin McDonald
Writer and producer of The Candidate, Robin McDonald, shared details about the film and working in the short-film industry.
Writer and producer Robin McDonald's The Candidate is a meditation on the rigorously impossible vetting processes of 21st century life.
Film Pittsburgh: If The Candidate were the offspring of two other films, who are its parents?
RM: Ha! That’s tough one to answer without giving away its reveal. How about: in the tone of Coen Brothers with a dash of A Few Good Men.
FP: What do you find unique about working in short form?
RM: What was unique for me was the editing process. I have a background in writing short form sketch at The Groundlings, so for me, creating a beginning, middle and end in a few pages was right in line with what I felt I knew. But I was amazed with how great editing can take those few pages and shape them into something unexpected.
FP: Because it’s Halloween: what’s your all-time favorite horror flick?
RM: NOSFERATU - yeah, I’m old!
FP: Any wisdom for aspiring filmmakers or actors?
RM: We were blessed with a great director and crew, all who went above and beyond. Surround yourself with great collaborators, those you know are on the same page, with the same sensibilities. Take care of your peeps, especially if you are on a low or no budget—make sure they know that their time and talents are appreciated!
