Fear and love in the American South are explored through the life of rural Georgia resident Chris Buckley in the award-winning documentary, Refuge. Buckley, a husband, father, veteran, and former leader in the KKK, developed a hatred for Muslims when the planes hit the Twin Towers on 9/11. But his beliefs start to be challenged when he receives a text from Dr. Heval Kelli, a Muslim. Dr. Kelli, a Kurdish refugee and cardiologist living in a resettlement community in Clarkston, Georgia, is committed to trying to reverse the hateful rhetoric of rising white nationalism. Refuge reveals the story of how these two men began a dialogue seeking to better understand one another and soon developed an unlikely friendship that points to a better path forward.
