Bulgarian Rhapsody
Pittsburgh Premiere
A love triangle envelopes three teenagers during the tumultuous summer of 1943 in Bulgaria. Best friends Moni and Giogio practice kissing on pin-up girl posters, listen to jazz, and recite lines made famous by Gable and Bogart. They both fall for Moni’s alluring cousin who comes to visit from across the border in Greece. But, inevitably, the war brings everything back to reality despite Bulgaria’s refusal to deport its Jews. The film creates a vivid look at the culture of the time and place including a score filled with Balkan folk and klezmer-style melodies and terrific acting by the three young leads. Bulgaria’s submission to the Oscars for Best Foreign Film.
