Teeming with old-world beauty, Luzzu is the story of a hardworking fisherman faced with an agonizing choice. Does he repair his leaky luzzu—a traditional multicolored wooden fishing boat—and attempt to eke out a meager living for his wife and newborn son? Or, does he compromise his morals and ethics to better provide for his family? Starring newcomer and real-life Maltese fisherman Jesmark Scicluna, this gripping film also heralds the arrival of writer-director-editor Alex Camilleri. In the neorealist tradition of Luchino Visconti and Roberto Rosselini, Camilleri’s film delivers a powerful story featuring honest, powerful performances and stunning cinematography.
