The Best of Men is a remarkable and inspiring film based on the true story of Dr. Ludwig Guttmann, a neurologist and refugee from Nazi Germany. Guttmann arrives at a UK hospital to find a ward full of British soldiers, heavily sedated and bedridden with spinal cord injuries. Rather than capitulating to his peers, Guttmann implements a new regimen whereby the servicemen use wheelchair hockey and other sports to build strength and gain confidence. Creating the first competition among athletes who are disabled, Guttmann was the architect of what we know of today as the Paralympic Games. Portraying Guttmann with endless energy and determination, Eddie Marsan gives a star turn in the lead role.
