The inappropriate use of the word retard(ed) can be heard every day and continues to marginalize a diverse population of people. Through the personal narratives of four siblings and first-person accounts of self-advocates, the film confronts how, when, and why the r-word became so present in our culture, illustrates who it impacts, and ultimately makes the case for changing the conversation around people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. The R-Word is an unflinching, heartwarming, humorous and hopeful film about why words matter.
