The Replacement
Pittsburgh Premiere
In a small seaside town, a hardened young police officer is thrust into the middle of the murder investigation of an inspector he was hired to replace. He soon discovers there is far more to the case than has been revealed and is intent on uncovering the truth. This intense film, reminiscent of a 1980’s police thriller, was inspired by director Óscar Aibar’s shocking personal experience. While dining at a beach restaurant in Spain, Aibar spotted among photos of celebrity diners, a group shot of Nazis enjoying paella as they celebrated their safety. Astonished, he soon discovered that while most Nazi officers fled in exile to Latin America, many others found protection much closer to home, first under Franco and then during the Transition. The Replacement, which includes a few surprises of its own, is the gritty and stirring film born of that personal and shocking revelation.
